Talk Like A Pirate Day 2013

September 19, 2013 | 12:05 pm |

What started as a simple tradition among friends, was embedded into Internet lore with an article by humorist Dave Barry. Talk Like A Pirate Day has been going strong for about a decade.

While there are signs the homespun viral trend is abating, it’s still an important holiday to all of us (even though most don’t know it).

Here’s a prior year’s comprehensive post.

Like the Fed, you never know what a Pirate will do.

Arrgh.

Images of 9/11

September 11, 2013 | 12:25 pm |

Some of these images were taken by myself or my staff during, to and from property inspections. Some were sent to me by friends and colleagues back then but I didn’t keep a record of where they came from, hence the lack of attributions. Unfortunately I’ve got a lot more photos but these are enough.

Nathan Pyle’s NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette Book Coming Soon!

August 12, 2013 | 12:15 pm | Books |

If you’re a reader of Matrix, then you’ve been subjected to my fandom of the work of my friend Nathan Pyle, here, here, here and here will have his very clever observations about NYC published in 2014.

Here’s a nice write up in Gizmodo and The Daily Dot. Don’t forget to “like” his Facebook page so you’ll know when the book is published!

DISCLOSURE: the fact that we disagree on the pronunciation of GIF (I’m in the “like the peanut butter “Jif” camp.), his work is smooth, not chunky.

The following is a recent batch that “probably” didn’t make the book (imagine how good the images in the book will be):

March 26, 2013 | 1:59 pm | Books |

My friend and crazy talented artist Nathan Pyle created a series of rotating gifs that should prove useful to those who just moved to the big city.

National Pi Day 3.1415926535897932384626433832795

March 14, 2013 | 4:01 pm |

I know this is tiring, but it’s March 14th, better known as National Pi Day – an important day of celebration since 1998. Incidentally the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day in 2009 – proof that they can actually get important things done.

More importantly, I’ve learned over the years:

Pie is better than Cake.

Or as my friend told me recently:

“‘Pie in the sky’ is better than ‘cake on the ground.'”

Powerful stuff anyway you slice it (sorry).

What Are You On? Lance Armstrong and Power of Marketing

January 20, 2013 | 11:33 am | TV, Videos |

By now I think most of us have been nearly worn out by all the coverage of the “Doprah” interview last week with the play by play daily snippets leaked before the interview actually aired.

I won’t pontificate because there is plenty of that. I just want to show you the 30 second video I’ve watched hundreds of times for inspiration since it aired a decade ago. While he’s never been my “hero,” he has been an inspiration. The video takes on a whole new meaning now.

Besides Being Your Personal Responsibility, It Just Feels Good To Vote #Election2012

November 6, 2012 | 12:41 pm

I cast my vote this morning and it just felt good. My wife and 3 oldest kids are all voting today. It represents the basic premise of our democracy and what our soldiers have fought and died for. Don’t give %%$#% excuses, just do it.

Check out Nate Silver’s blog FiveThirtyEight (my statistician hero) for updates. By the way, Nate Silver isn’t a witch.

As an added bonus, you’ll get a badge on foursquare by checking into a polling location – that should cure widespread voter apathy immediately, right?

Housing Trends & Talk Like A Pirate Day 2012 (10th Anniversary)

September 19, 2012 | 1:42 pm

Well, NAR released the August 2012 existing home sale numbers today. Yawn.

More importantly, it’s International Talk Like A Pirate Day and I’ve marked this day on my calendar for nearly as long as the 10-year run it’s had. Just mentioning the annual event to my kids makes them worry about me and yet be embarrassed for me at the the same time.

For more about this important holiday, you can get the story and go right to the founder’s web site.

And yes, home sales are up. [Pirate talk translator]

More fun from my friend Nathan Pyle. I think many, especially New Yorkers, can relate.
