Transit Union Walkout: Can’t Do Our Site Inspections

December 20, 2005 | 9:01 am |

One of the drawbacks (and advantages) of performing residential appraisal assignments in an urban area is the dependency on public transportation. In Manhattan, our appraisers take buses and subways to our inspections and occasionally a cab. Well today, the NYC Transit Union went on strike [NYT] for the first time in 25 years. With 33,700 subway and bus workers staying home today, its tough for us to get around the city. Cabs will be nearly impossible to find since they will be in very high demand.

Looks like our appraisers will be canceling our appointments today since we can’t get to our inspections. I sure hope our clients in other markets understand.

CPI: Christmas Price Index, The True Cost Of The Holidays

December 6, 2005 | 12:01 am |

The True Cost of the 12 Days of Christmas…

I stumbled across a CPI index I was not familiar with created by PNC, The PNC Christmas Price Index [PNC]

It all started 21 years ago as a way to engage clients and has since grown into one of PNC’s most popular and anticipated economic reports: The Annual PNC Christmas Price Index.

There is an index for each of the twelve days of Christmas and they are matched against the decidedly boring government version of CPI.

Check each index out, although other than Turtle Doves, Gold Rings and Swans-a-Swimming, we are looking at some decidely intense holiday inflationary pressures. 😉

Warning: The site plays holiday music so be careful or you might get in the spirit of the holidays.

We’re off for the holidays starting NOW! Back on Monday, possibly sooner depending on the intensity of our indigestion.

The luckiest turkey on the planet.

Talk Like A Pirate Day: September 19, 2005

September 19, 2005 | 9:42 am |

We all need a break from real estate news every now and then…

pirate

Every September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day where people stop concentrating on work and search for anything related to Pirates. According to Wikipedia, International Talk Like A Pirate Day is a parodic holiday invented in 1995 by two Americans, John Baur (“Ol’ Chum Bucket”) and Mark Summers (“Cap’n Slappy”), who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like pirate. In 2002, humorist Dave Barry wrote a column on this and the rest, they say, is history.

Here’s a sampling of how much interest there is in this topic:

[Search For Talk Like A Pirate Day Sites]

Notable coverage of this event includes:

[Washington Post]
[National Review]

Other Sites of Interest:

[Talk Like A Pirate Day] This is my developer’s site which was the second most Googled search on the day the Dave Barry article came out in 2002.
[Flickr International Talk Like A Pirate Day Photo Group]
[The Landlover’s Guide to Pirates]
[The Official British Headquarters for International Talk Like A Pirate Day]
[The Official Aussie Site for Talk Like A Pirate Day]

What does this have to do with the real estate economy? I could say something clever like “Thats how some buyers feel about their sellers” or “capital gains tax = pirating profits by the government” but I’d rather not say something clever so…aye! get back to work ‘ya landlubber!
